Chattooga Spring ’03: >> fishing chronicles

It was the first week in April, and it also happened to be the annual Spring Break in our local School District. Since I work for the District, I benefited from the break just like Graham, my son, did. With the weather taking a turn for the warmer after a wet weekend, it didn’t take much discussion to start making plans for a trip to the nearby mountains above Walhalla, South Carolina. An extended stay seemed in order, so we began the process of loading up the backpacks for several days of fishing on my favorite river, the Chattooga. It also didn’t hurt things to realize that the State Fish Hatchery had been stocking the river for a good month or more, so we were looking forward to the trip with no small degree of anticipation. It was not an easy decision since the weekend had been one of the rainy ones so typical of our weather. We didn’t know if we would catch a break or not with regard to the weather. But some things win out over pure logic and reason, and asmany have said before, “The best time to go fishing is whenever you can.”
